NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks opened lower on Thursday after a weaker-than-expected report on weekly jobless claims cast some doubt on the strength of the recovering economy.
The Dow Jones industrial average (^DJI - News) was down 18.37 points, or 0.17 percent, at 10,719.33. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 Index (CBOE:^SPX - News) was down 1.41 points, or 0.12 percent, at 1,156.35. The technology-laced Nasdaq Composite Index (NasdaqSC:^IXIC - News) was down 5.4 points, or 0.26 percent, at 2,084.26.
