Vivendi seeks to buy stake in Zain Africa
By Okuttah Mark, Citizen Correspondent, Nairobi
France-based telecom giant Vivendi has started talks with the Kuwaitbased Mobile Telecommunication Company (MTC) to acquire the African operations of Zain, including the Kenyan outfit.
Information from Zain's website quoting Business Day of Nigeria says MTCthe owner of the Zain brandwas in talks with the French company to sell its 85 per cent stake in Zain Africa for $12 billion.
This will not be the first time, Vivendi is showing an interest to invest in Africas mobile telephony sector since they owned a 60 per cent stake in the same firm when its was known as KenCell before it sold its holding at $ 250 million to Celtel International, which later sold its shares to Zain Group for $ 3.4 billion in March 2005.
Vivendi has a presence in other African countries such as Mauritania (Mauritel), Burkina Faso (Onatel), Moroccos Maroc and Gabon (Gabon Telecom).
Zain operates in 16 countries in Africa, Kenya included, and six in the Middle East.
Zain Kenya is the second largest mobile company in Kenya.
This is the fourth time in Kenya that the second mobile telecom licence to be awarded to an operator is changing ownership.
When contacted by Business Daily last Wednesday, Zain Kenya could not confirm or deny reports of the intended sale but the company's director of communications, Mr Michael Okwiri, said details would be made public as soon as official communication comes from the head office.
"Most of the media fraternity in Kenya and other African markets have received the reports through internet -based alerts.
If and when there is official communication from the group, we will definitely share it with you, Mr Okwiri said.
If the deal succeeds, Vivendi is expected to buy Zain Africa's debts, which will be discounted from the sale price. The report said the deal could be concluded as early as next week but indicated that other buyers were waiting in the wings should the talks fail.
Last week, people familiar with the deal said the search for a buyer began early last month and had attracted a number of prospective buyers.
