Cendant Near Deal to Buy Orbitz

PHILADELPHIA (Reuters) - Travel and real estate heavyweight Cendant Corp. (NYSE:CD - News) is nearing a deal to buy online travel site Orbitz Inc. (NasdaqNM:ORBZ - News), which is controlled by the top five U.S. airlines, for about $1.2 billion in cash, a source close to the talks said on Tuesday.

In a deal that could be announced as early as Wednesday morning, Orbitz would change hands for about $28 a share, a 35 percent premium to its closing share price on Tuesday of $20.77.

Both companies' boards of directors will meet on Tuesday evening to consider approval of the deal, the source said. Orbitz' share price jumped nearly 20 percent in after-hours trading after the story was first reported in the New York Times.
