Bulls move before jobs

U.S. markets set to open higher as oil price dip outweighs September employment report concern.
10/08/04 05:34 AM, EDT
Even with all the attention on the pending September jobs report, oil again dominates the pre-opening U.S. stock activity Friday, with futures higher as the end of a Nigerian strike sent oil lower.

After Market Report

The story of the Bulls and the Bears, Part II

Last week we relayed a story of the bulls and the bears. Using a boxing analogy once again, after last Friday’s close the bulls had the bears on the ropes and needed one last punch to take them completely out of the game. This last punch would have been a strong follow through from last Friday’s breakout. Monday came and went without a strong follow through. Bears continued to stay out of the bulls way through Wednesday’s trading, but the knockout blow was never delivered. On Thursday, bears recovered somewhat and made a move against the complacent bulls and on Friday the bears fought back hard

Friday’s action, as described by Briefing.com

The market remains on the defensive as investors continue to be put off by the pace of economic growth... By and large, all of this week's economic reports (August Factory Orders, September ISM Services, September employment) fell short of expectations and reinforced fears about a global slowdown... The persistently high price of crude oil - which has set three all-time highs this week - hasn't helped in that regard and has helped keep Asia and Europe in the red too

Friday the S&P once again closed below breakout levels after the series of setbacks described above took the wind out of the bull’s sails. So, where does this leave us as we move into the coming week? Unfortunately this brings us back to neutral. We are not yet ready to call the S&P breakout of October 1 a failure yet. In order to do that we will need to see follow through from the bear camp on Monday. If selling doesn’t follow, which we tend to lean toward, the near term outlook remains neutral to slightly bullish

The bottom line is that until we get a decisive victory from
either the bull or the bear camp trading will remain tough
