NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Home furnishings and kitchen ware retailer Williams-Sonoma Inc. السببreported a surprise second-quarter profit Wednesday, after it controlled costs and inventory to offset weaker demand following the collapse of housing market and the ensuing recession.
The San Francisco-based retailer (WSM 19.18, +1.11, +6.14%) said it's also raising its forecast for the third quarter after second-quarter sales turned out to be at the high end of its previous projection.
Shares of Williams-Sonoma soared 14% to $17.59 in early trading. Before Wednesday, the share price almost doubled this year.
