08:38 SYNC Intellisync could beat guidance; reit Buy - Stanford (2.43 )

Stanford notes that SYNC reports 2Q05 tomorrow before the mkt opens and expects the co to report revs of $14 mln, well ahead of its guidance of $13 mln. Firm also believes that SYNC could turn a pro-forma profit. They also expect strong guidance for F3Q05 for a minimum EPS of breakeven on revs ranging from $14.5-$15.5 mln. Strong expectations are based on four observations: 1) enterprises are labeling wireless mobility as a priority investment, 2) SYNC's strong revs for the Jan '05 quarter are partially due to factors unrelated to year-end budget flushes or new budgets for 2005, 3) Verizon continues to develop well and Verizon enterprise offering will be launched soon, and 4) SYNC continues to sign new subscribers as promised.

Bank of America is sticking with its Buy rating on this e-learning software stock on recent sharp weakness. The firm thinks the backdrop for the company remains positive -- recent economic and labor data (in segments that would use e-learning software) and its research indicates a more potentially positive outlook than the stock's slide implies. The firm does not believe there has been further erosion in Skillsoft's market since its last conference call. SKIL is a "show-me" stock that may not offer evidence of improvement until its Q4 (Jan) release in mid-March. Firm thinks it should be in-line, but whether it's a catalyst for the stock depends of course on guidance as well.

Co discloses in today's 8-K that on Feb 15 it took actions to reduce its operating expenses, including reducing its worldwide workforce by approx 25%, eliminating 153 positions. The co took these actions based on a continuing review of its business plans and operations. As a result, the co expects to record a charge of approx $4.0 mln for the quarter ending April 30, 2005 and expects that the workforce reduction will result in cash expenditures, consisting principally of severance and employee benefit payments, of approx $3.6 mln, during the co's 2005 fiscal year and of approx $0.4 mln during FY06. The co expects to realize annual savings in operating expenses of approx $13.0 mln as a result of these actions.

Making a new 52-week high today is MadCatz, a provider of third-party video game accessories. The co recently reported a strong Q3 (Dec) as sales increased 25.9% to $52.8 mln. More importantly and surprising to us, given its sub-$2 price, was that the co is profitable, reporting EPS of $0.07. The co was able to post these results despite console hardware shortages this holiday season as it had the right products for its extensive retail distribution channels. It also enjoyed the successful launch of several new core accessory products, new licensing agreements and introductions in adjacent categories including the Nintendo DS accessories and the co's first published software game. The co recently signed licensing deals to create customized PS2 and Xbox controllers with the NFL and NBA. However, traders are perhaps most intrigued by the co as an iPod play as it sells "accessory starter kits" for the iPod.... Can't say we love the stock fundamentally, but it sales are strong, it's profitable, the trading action is favorable (pushing to new highs on increasing volume) and momentum traders love stocks below $2. Mkt cap $66 mln, avg vol 280K, float 44.9 mln.
