500-Mile Russian Oil Pipeline Project Selects Northern Power for Critical Systems
PR Newswire - August 25, 2005 16:39
Company's TelePrime(TM) Systems to Supply Power for Maintenance and Telecom Needs

WAITSFIELD, Vt., Aug 25, 2005 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Northern Power Systems, a subsidiary of Distributed Energy Systems Corp (Nasdaq: DESC), announced that it has been selected to provide two integrated power systems for the Sakhalin-II Pipeline project on Sakhalin Island in the Russian far east. The contract is valued at approximately $1.5 million, bringing Northern Power's total contractual involvement in Sakhalin oil and gas development projects to more than $6 million.

Northern Power will supply its TelePrime(TM) power systems to the 800-kilometer (approximately 500-mile) pipeline to provide reliable, uninterrupted power for maintenance and telecom needs. A particular use for the power generated will be for the maintenance practice known as "pig launching." This process, by which a solid plug, or "pig," is passed through a pipeline, facilitates cleaning, separates product, and measures the pipeline's wall thickness.

About the System

The two TelePrime (continuous-run) systems will utilize natural gas-fueled, reciprocating engines. Also included in the systems will be Northern Power's state-of-the-art Programmable Logic Controller-based controllers, providing complete electrical and environmental system control, as well as a communications interface for remote monitoring and control. The system is designed to handle larger-than-projected or high peak loads and to be flexible enough to handle evolving application requirements.

Responsible for the design, fabrication and testing of the systems, Northern Power plans to complete manufacturing at its new 100,000 sq. foot facility in Barre, Vermont; the first system will ship to Russia by mid-March 2006.

About the Pipeline

The Sakhalin-II Pipeline, which runs the length of Sakhalin Island, is owned and operated by Sakhalin Energy Investment Corp (SEIC). It is currently the largest integrated oil and gas project in the world. The system transports oil and gas from offshore oil fields northeast of Sakhalin Island through two separate parallel pipelines to the southern end of the island. Oil is then loaded on tankers and natural gas is liquefied at an onshore liquid natural gas (LNG) facility and loaded on LNG tankers.

The pipeline route crosses many active and inactive faults, and the SEIC has gone to great effort to ensure safety of the pipeline and the environment. Such careful attention to safety means that power reliability for maintenance and communications is extremely crucial.

"The project allows us to again tackle the environmental and logistical challenges attendant with modern energy infrastructure applications," said Michael Brennan, Vice President for Northern Power's Industrial Infrastructure Group. Mr. Brennan added, "With the Sakhalin-II project, Northern Power is now providing systems for five of the largest new pipeline projects in the world."

Darren Jamison, Chief Operating Officer at Northern Power stated, "Our continued growth in remote power systems is due in part to the rise in global oil prices, which is spurring new oil and gas projects. We will continue to work hard to be at the forefront, providing reliable and innovative, real-world distributed generation solutions."
