1. MORNING OUTLOOK
Pre-market futures are lower and suggesting that markets may open
flat to lower. European markets extended losses for a second straight
session on Wednesday, with autos, tech shares, and airlines leading
the declines. Tokyo stocks remained down in Wednesday afternoon trade
as upwardly revised Japan GDP data couldn't dissuade investors from
taking profits in technology issues after the Nasdaq fell off its perch
in a down day on Wall Street.
U.S. stocks posted losses Tuesday, pressured by declines in retail
and technology shares. ~ forfeited 79.09 points, or 0.8 percent,
to 9,507.20. The Dow Jones Industrial Average forfeited 79.09
points, or 0.8 percent, to 9,507.20. The Nasdaq and S&P 500
declined for the second time in 11 days and the Dow for the second
time in eight sessions. A bruising decline in Nokia tripped the
telecom sector while Home Depot remained the Dow's biggest
decliner on the heels of a downgrade from Goldman Sachs. But
McDonald's was a bright spot among blue chips after reporting
strong monthly sales and Alcoa wooed buyers amid upbeat comments
from Wall Street. The Nasdaq Composite lost 15.19 points, or
0.8 percent, to 1,873.43 and the Nasdaq 100 Index of
larger-capitalization stocks declined 16.17 points, or 1.2
percent, to 1,370.56. On Monday, the Nasdaq finished at an
18-month peak. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index subtracted 0.8
percent while the Russell 2000 Index of small-capitalization
stocks dipped 0.7 percent. Gold shares were the best
performers in the broad market as futures surged to a 7-year high.
The December gold contract advanced $6.60 to $382.80 an ounce. Oil
service shares declined after Banc of America downgraded the
oilfield service group to a 'market weight' rating from
'overweight.' And airline issues weakened amid fresh reports of a
new SARS case in Asia.
Dow lost 79 points to close at 9507. Dow is trading with positive
momentum above 50 and 200-Day MA. Dow is still in consolidation
mode and 9450-9500 level could act as further support. Trading
below 9450 could see some more retracement towards 9300 while
trading above 9575 area would be positive. DOW's resistance levels
are: 9625, 9749, 9901. DOW's support levels are: 9387, 9269, 9163.
Nasdaq lost 15.2 points to close at 1873. Nasdaq is trading with
positive momentum above 50 and 200-Day MA. Nasdaq is still
overbought condition and could see further retracement before
heading higher in the next few weeks. NASDAQ's resistance levels
are: 1910, 1955, 1973. NASDAQ's support levels are: 1843, 1803,
1783. Wednesday's trading could be cautious and choppy.
