ExciteAtHome Posts Wider Loss, Sales Fall

NEW YORK (Reuters) - ExciteAtHome Corp. on Thursday posted a wider third-quarter loss as the bankrupt company awaits a planned buyout of its high-speed Internet access services by its controlling stakeholder, AT&T Corp.

ExciteAtHome, recently delisted from the Nasdaq stock market, reported a net loss of $271.3 million, or 66 cents per share, compared with a loss of $41.6 million, or 10 cents per share, in the year-earlier third quarter.

Sales fell to $138.4 million from $169.9 million. The company stopped accepting new customers in October to preserve cash.

The company said worldwide subscribers to its high-speed Internet access service totaled 4,162,000 as of Sept. 30, an increase of about 486,000 during the quarter.

ExciteAtHome shares, which are now traded on the over-the counter bulletin board, were off less than a penny, or more than 3 percent, to about 6 cents.

In September long-distance telephone and cable-television company AT&T agreed to buy ExciteAtHome's high-speed Internet access business for $307 million and the assumption of certain liabilities.

Last week ExciteAtHome said it had agreed to sell certain assets related to its portal Excite.com to Internet and wireless services provider InfoSpace Inc. for $10 million.

Because of its bankruptcy proceedings and efforts to sell some of its non-core businesses and streamline operations, ExciteAtHome said it would not be able file its quarterly earnings report with the Securities and Exchange Commission on time.
