OTC: ZAPZ.OB Smart Car trades 23% higher as it gets EPA

We have smart cards, smart phones, smart appliances. Now we have the smart....car. After five years on the market in Europe, the 3-cylinder 60-MPG Smart Car was granted a certificate of conformity by the EPA, clearing the way for US sales by ZAP (OTC: ZAPZ). The Smart car goes on display to the public for the first time at The San Francisco Auto Show Nov 21-28. In May, ZAP signed an exclusive distribution contract with Smart-Automobile LLC for the rights to sell the cars in the US. The co has a goal of 150 dealer outlets by Q2 of 2005. The Smart Car parks in the space of a motorcycle, yet stands up to a Mercedes in crash-tests, while averaging 60 MPG. Mgmt hopes the car will have the same appeal to US consumers as cars like the popular Mini Cooper, although the Smart is smaller and more fuel-efficient. Also, hybrid cars are becoming more popular as gas prices rise. At eight feet in length, two can park bumper-to-bumper in a single parking space. In spite of its small size, Smart has said the ForTwo is safe because of its sturdy body-encompassing frame. Prices will range from the mid-teens to as much as $23,000. Smart reported plans to sell a small SUV which will seat four... It's a stock to keep on the radar screen as a trade as the car is likely to make headlines over the coming months. The stock spiked from $0.50 to $4 in May when it announced the deal with Smart... Mkt cap $43 mln, avg volume 72K, float 12.5 mln.
