Research In Motion: WSJ story discusses the takeover speculation that has swirled about RIMM of late (RIMM) 69.28 : The WSJ's "Heard on the Street" column discusses RIM, saying that Blackberry has become appetizing. With surging sales of its BlackBerry, the co has emerged as a hot tech co and a darling of Wall St., whose denizens are among the heaviest users of the gadget. RIM's subscriber count doubled in the past year to more than 2 mln, and it added 387K new subscribers in the 3 months ending in Nov alone, helped by sales of its popular phone-enabled BlackBerry. With 1.6 bn cellular-telephone users in the world, and BlackBerry accounting for just 2 mln of them, some say the co's real growth may lie ahead. "I can see them more than doubling their subscribers over the next year," and the eventual mkt for wireless corporate e-mail globally could reach 100 mln, says Terry Dimock, vice president of TAL Global Asset Mgmt. In that light article questions that is RIM ready for picking? The co's often-volatile stock shot up earlier this month when a Goldman Sachs research report noted that RIM is "the only player with a tech stronghold in the corporate arena, making it a very attractive take-out candidate
It named wireless titans Nokia (NOK) and Motorola (MOT) as potential buyers of the co in order to get into the lucrative mkt of wireless e-mail among corporate users. RIM's stock is well off its recent high of $93 in early Nov and fell sharply earlier this week on some investor concerns that competitors are coming out with devices that will compete more aggressively with the BlackBerry. UBS calls the competition concerns "unwarranted." Any sell-off of RIM shares could make it more appealing for a buyer. Microsoft has also been mentioned in past takeover talk.
