VeriSign (VRSN: news, chart, profile) tumbled $5.94, or 33 percent, to $12.30. As of 9:15 a.m. ET, volume was 5 million shares, versus its full-day average of approximately 7.6 million shares.
The company met consensus analyst profit expectations but missed revenue forecasts. The company also said it would reduce its workforce by 10 percent, or 350 employees. See full story.
Analysts from Bear Stearns and J.P. Morgan followed by downgrading the stock citing weakness in the company's domain name business and weak outlook.
CS First Boston also downgraded the stock, and lowered its price target to $20 from $64.
Kudos to SoundView Technology, which downgraded the stock on Wednesday, due to increased risk in the company's domain name business.
