No. 1 stock picks of top-performing newsletters
September 17, 2005 08:00:00 (ET)
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Apple Computer's stock is up 55% year to date. You've missed the boat on the big run-up, right?
Not according to the top investment newsletters. Hulbert Financial Digest, which tracks the performance and recommendations of 188 advisory services, regularly analyzes the portfolios of the 20 top-performing newsletters, looking for consensus on standout stocks.
The latest analysis zeros in on 10: Apple Computer (AAPL, Trade), American Eagle Outfitters (AEOS, Trade), Autodesk (ADSK, Trade), America Movil SA de CV (AMX, Trade), Companhia Vale Do Rio Doce (RIO, Trade), Hansen Natural (HANS, Trade), Pfizer (PFE, Trade), Toll Brothers (TOL, Trade), Transocean (RIG, Trade) and Valero Energy (VLO, Trade).
In the highly fractured world of investment newsletters, agreement on Apple and American Eagle -- four of the 20 newsletters whose portfolios have generated the best returns over the last year are recommending the stock -- is highly unusual.
But beware. Keep in mind that companies most recommended by advisers with the best recent performance tend to be high-fliers.
Looking beyond recent winners turns up a half dozen other stocks to consider. Pharmaceutical firm Pfizer is the most-recommended issue among all 188 investment letters, touted by 17 editors. The next most widely held stocks are Bank of America (BAC, Trade), Home Depot (HD, Trade), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ, Trade), Microsoft (MSFT, Trade) and Unitedhealth Group (UNH, Trade), each pushed by 12 newsletters.
