Ciena Posts Fiscal 3rd-Qtr Loss as Sales Tumble 89% (Update3)

Linthicum, Maryland, Aug. 22 (Bloomberg) -- Ciena Corp., the third-biggest U.S. maker of fiber-optic equipment, posted a quarterly net loss as sales tumbled 89 percent to their lowest level since the company's initial public offering.
The loss in the third quarter ended July 31 was $160 million, or 42 cents a share, compared with net income of $5.7 million, or 2 cents, a year earlier, Ciena said in a statement. Sales slid to $50 million from $458.1 million.
Ciena predicted revenue would be unchanged or rise slightly this quarter from the preceding three months. Orders for Ciena's gear, which moves and directs information across networks, has plummeted in the past year as demand for phone and data services waned. Lower spending by customers such as Sprint Corp. forced Ciena to cut jobs, plants and product lines to reduce expenses.
``We'd like nothing more than to say the worst is over, but it's not clear we're there just yet,'' Chief Executive Officer Gary Smith said on a conference call with investors and analysts.
Shares of Linthicum, Maryland-based Ciena fell 34 cents, or 7.6 percent, to $4.15 at 9:07 a.m. New York time in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. They had declined 74 percent in the past year.
Excluding job and inventory-related costs, stock-compensation expenses and a credit received after a customer paid a bill that Ciena previously had written off, the third-quarter loss would have been 16 cents a share.
The company was forecast to lose 19 cents, excluding certain costs, on sales of $68.1 million, the average estimates of analysts polled by Thomson First Call.
Ciena said on the call that it will have a fourth-quarter loss, before some costs, of 17 cents to 19 cents a share. Analysts had forecast a fourth-quarter loss of 18 cents a share on sales of $78.4 million.
