1. MORNING OUTLOOK
Pre-market futures are lower and suggesting that markets may open
flat to lower. European markets traded in a tight range on Thursday,
as profit-taking and disappointing earnings weighed on markets. Tokyo's
key benchmark snapped a four-session winning streak Thursday as
surging auto and drug stocks couldn't offset losses for bank and
technology issues.
U.S. stocks posted modest gains Wednesday as buying in the airline
and technology sectors helped the Nasdaq end at a new 17-month
high Wednesday while the Dow and S&P 500 closed at levels not seen
in almost 15 months. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 45.19
points, or 0.47 percent, to 9,568.46. The Nasdaq Composite rose
11.42 points, or 0.62 percent, to 1,852.90 while the Nasdaq 100
Index lost 0.90 points, or 0.07 percent, to 1360.19. The Standard
& Poor's 500 Index rose 0.42 percent while the Russell 2000 Index
of small-capitalization stocks rose 0.63 percent. Volume amounted
to 1.64 billion on the NYSE and 2.34 billion on the Nasdaq Stock
Market. Market breadth was positive, with Advancers were leading
Decliners by 2048 to 1211 on the NYSE. Nasdaq's Advancers were
leading Decliners by 1854 to 1348.
Dow gained 45 points to close at 9568. Dow is trading with
positive momentum above 50 and 200-Day MA. Dow traded in positive
territory most of the day as the strength in Airline and
Technology sectors hint further upside in the next few months.
Watch 9600 for potential continuation of trend and 9500 level for
weakness. DOW's resistance levels are: 9687, 9811, 9965. DOW's
support levels are: 9448, 9328, 9222. Nasdaq gained 11.4 points to
close at 1852.9. Nasdaq is in overbought condition and still
showing strong strength. Although some of the sectors in Nasdaq
are showing some signs of retracement, Nasdaq could move higher in
the next few weeks. Thursday's trading could be cautious and
choppy.
