SGI Says Revenue Above Previous Range

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Computer maker Silicon Graphics Inc. said on Monday it expects its quarterly revenue to be $215 million to $220 million, higher than it forecast in July, when it last reported results.

The maker of high-performance workstations and computers had previously said it expected revenue for its first quarter ended Sept. 26 of $200 million to $210 million.
Silicon Graphics, also known as SGI, said it now expects an operating loss of $40 million to $45 million, including a previously announced restructuring charge of about $20 million.
Without the charge, its operating loss is expected to be between $20 million and $25 million, SGI said in a statement.
SGI, whose principal customers are defense contractors, the U.S. government and Hollywood studios, recently sold a manufacturing plant in Switzerland that it closed in 2001. SGI will receive $10.5 million in net cash, resulting in a loss on the sale of about $500,000.
In August, Mountain View, California-based SGI said it would cut 600 jobs, or 17 percent of its work force at the time, to reduce operating expenses.
Shares of SGI rose 1 cent to close at 95 cents on the New York Stock Exchange (News - Websites). The shares have declined 16 percent in value this year.
The one brokerage with a published forecast on SGI, Needham & Co., expects the company to post a loss of 16 cents a share, on revenue of $207.2 million, according to Reuters Research, a unit of Reuters group Plc.
