1. MORNING OUTLOOK
Pre-market futures are higher and suggesting that markets may open
flat to higher. European markets on Tuesday staged a partial recovery
from the sell-off in the prior session, boosted by overnight improvements
in the U.S. and Japan and by takeover talk surrounding German financials.
Tokyo stocks rose Tuesday as reports of merger talks between two leading
drugmakers fueled gains for that sector while banking and Internet stocks
rebounded from recent heavy losses.
U.S. stocks posted losses Monday, closing lower for the third day in
a row as renewed fears of terrorism hurt shares of airlines and
tech companies while further revelations in the mutual fund
scandal sent financial stocks lower. The Dow Jones Industrial
Average lost 57.85 points, or 0.59 percent, to 9,710.83. The
Nasdaq Composite lost 20.65 points, or 1.07 percent, to 1,909.61
while the Nasdaq 100 Index lost 13.76 points, or 1 percent, to
1393.75. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index lost 0.64 percent while
the Russell 2000 Index of small-capitalization stocks lost 1.3
percent. Volume amounted to 1.32 billion on the NYSE and 1.87
billion on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Market breadth was negative,
with Decliners were leading Advancers by 2276 to 976 on the NYSE.
Nasdaq's Decliners were leading Advancers by 2202 to 994.
Dow lost 57.8 points to close at 9710. Dow is trading with
negative momentum above 50 and 200-Day MA. Dow bounced off its key
support level (9650) today after the initial decline. If today's
late rally is held and if Dow breaks 9750 level, Dow could see
rally upside to test recent highs 9900 level. If Dow retraces to
9650 and breaks downside, it might see a larger retracement to
9400 (prev. trend channel). DOW's resistance levels are: 9831,
9957, 10113. DOW's support levels are: 9588, 9467, 9359. Nasdaq
lost 20.6 points to close at 1909. Nasdaq is trading with negative
momentum above 50 and 200-Day MA. Nasdaq could follow Dow's
direction and could see some technical bounce in the next few
sessions. NASDAQ is trading with negative momentum. NASDAQ's
resistance levels are: 1919, 1935, 1947. NASDAQ's support levels
are: 1888, 1859, 1846. Tuesday's trading could be cautious and
active.
