Intersil Swings to Second Quarter Profit on Sales Growth, Higher Profit Margins
MILPITAS, Calif. (AP) -- Semiconductor maker Intersil Corp. said Thursday that it swung to a second-quarter profit on sales growth and higher profit margins.
The company also said its shareholders approved the acquisition of fellow chipmaker Xicor on Thursday.
In the three months ended July 2, Intersil earned $27.2 million, or 19 cents per share, compared with a loss of $800,000, or 1 cent per share, during the same period last year. Year-ago results were hurt by a loss from discontinued operations of $18.3 million, or 13 cents a share.
Intersil posted operating income, adjusted for amortization of intangible assets and unearned compensation, of $27.9 million, or 20 cents per share. That result matched expectations of analysts surveyed by Thomson First Call.
Sales rose 15 percent to $144.2 million from $125.5 million and were particularly strong in the communications and industrial markets. Intersil said gross margins increased to 57.3 percent.
The company expects third-quarter earnings of 22 cents a share on revenue of between $154 million and $160 million, including sales from Xicor for about two-thirds of the quarter. Analysts expect the company to earn 22 cents a share on revenue of $155.7 million.
Shares closed earlier up 19 cents, or 1.2 percent, at $16.67 on the Nasdaq Stock Market. In the extended session, Intersil stock was up an additional 4.7 percent recently at $17.45.
